§ Jacob Wagner to Nathan Sanford. 15 September 1806, Department of State. “Owing to the separation of the Executive, your letter of the 9th. ult, as far as respects the compensation to the assistant Counsel in the cases of Smith & Ogden, has not hitherto been answered. I am now authorized to inform you that if Mr. Edwards will be so good as to make out his account for five hundred dollars and forward it to this office, that sum will be remitted to his order or the Branch Bank at New York or any other depositary of the public monies, which may be more convenient to him. I beg the favor of you to acquaint him of this.”
