From James Madison to Albert Gallatin, 6 October 1804 (Abstract)

§ To Albert Gallatin

6 October 1804, Department of State. “I request you to be pleased to issue a warrant for fifty six thousand dollars on the appropriations for foreign intercourse and to cause the proceeds thereof to be remitted to Messrs. Willinks and Van Staphonts [sic], the Bankers of this Department at Amsterdam.”1

1JM made similar requests for $6,000 on 22 Nov. and $675 on 11 Dec. 1804, the latter in favor of John Graham and charged to Graham’s account (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 14). On 6 and 23 Nov. 1804 and 31 Jan. 1805, JM asked Gallatin to issue warrants for $400, $500, and $500, respectively, for the contingent expenses of the State Department, to be charged to Christopher S. Thom (ibid., DNA: RG 59).
