It is requested by Mr Hancock, if not impracticable, that he should obtain this afternoon the intended letter for the Collector of Philada. in relation to prize vessel “Harmony.” At all events he wishes for an answer before he leaves the city. The messenger of the Secry. of the Treasury is directed to call at six o’Clock this afternoon for the President’s answer which he will bring to his lodgings.

RC (DLC); at foot of text: “The President of the U. States”; endorsed by TJ as a letter of “Oct. 7. for 8.” received from the Treasury Department on 8 Oct. and “the Harmony” and so recorded in SJL, but as a letter of 7 Oct.
Mr. Hancock, a U.S. citizen from Petersburg, Virginia, owned part of the cargo on the British sloop Harmony, which had been brought into Philadelphia by a French privateer. Hancock sought permission to unload the cargo before the prize vessel was ordered to leave the port (, 2:173–4; Gallatin to TJ, 8 Oct.).
