Sir

Will it be proper for me to apply to the chairman of the Committee of ways & means for an appropriation of five or six thousand dollars for defraying the expences of compleeting the line between the Cherokees and North Carolina, and for runing and marking the Chocktaw line, and also for ascertaining and runing the lines of the reserved tracts in the Northwestern & Indiana Territories, or should the application be made by your self.

APPROPRIATION: an act of Congress for military appropriations, approved 1 May 1802, included $5,000 for “running certain boundary lines between the Indians and white inhabitants of the United States, and for ascertaining the lines of sundry reserved tracts of land in the Indiana and Northwestern territories” (U.S. Statutes at Large description begins Richard Peters, ed., The Public Statutes at Large of the United States … 1789 to March 3, 1845, Boston, 1855–56, 8 vols. description ends , 2:183).
