To John Jay from William Bingham, 29 January 1788
From William Bingham
[Philadelphia January 29. 1788]
Dear Sir,
I have seen various detached Numbers of a periodical Publication under the Title of the Fœderalist, which have much pleased me, as the Author has treated the Subject in a Strong masterly Manner—I have heard that it is about to be republished in the Form of a Pamphlet, in which Case I shall be much indebted to you for a Copy—1
The Opposition to the new Government in this State, which was confined to a few factious Characters, is daily growing weaker, as it is evident little impression has been made in favor of their Views, by all their laboured Productions—
The friends to the fœderal Constitution are much alarmed at a Report that your Legislature are averse to calling a Convention of the People, to ratify it—
I am happy to find that a Minister has arrived from the Court of Versailles, & that he has brought Several of his family—If they can be reconciled to our Simple republican Manners, they may prove valuable Accessions to your Society at New York—
Mrs Bingham joins me in respectful Complements to Mrs Jay—Believe me to be with sincere Esteem Dear Sir Your obedt hble Sevt
Wm Bingham
