5Beaumont had been trying to obtain this bill of exchange for the better part of a week, but Bachois de Villefort would not release it without BF’s permission. The lieutenant criminel first sent BF a copy of the bill, explaining that it was among the seized possessions that Shaffer was now reclaiming and asking whether BF would agree to its being returned. (That letter is undated, but we assume that it was after Feb. 2, when Beaumont wrote to BF with the news of Shaffer’s release and mentioned nothing about this difficulty; see the annotation of Shaffer to BF, Feb. 1, above.) Beaumont wrote to BF on a “Jeudy Cinq heures du Soir,” probably Feb. 5, saying that he had just seen Bachois, and that the lieutenant criminel would not release the bill of exchange until BF verified that the signature on it was genuine: Bachois de Villefort to BF, [after Feb. 2, 1784?]; Beaumont to BF, [Feb. 5, 1784?], both at the APS.
