RC (Meermanno-Westrenianum Museum, The Hague). PrC (DLC).

In a collection of trade cards, addresses, tavern bills, &c., accumulated during TJ’s trip to Holland and Germany (MHi) there is a card in the hand of Van Damme which reads: “Addresse. Pr. van Damme, Libraire, A Amsterdam.” les numeros … debeurre: The numbers in TJ’s list of books correspond to those in Guillaume-François De Bure, Bibliographie Instructive: ou Traité de la connoissance des livres rares et singuliers, 10 vol., Paris, 1763–82; his listing of the volumes desired is drawn in greatly abbreviated form from De Bure’s descriptions of the volumes under these numbers. Several errors have been corrected below but variations in spelling have not been noted. In the RC there are check marks drawn before each of the numbers representing the volumes which were sent to TJ by Van Damme with his letter of 25 June 1788, q.v.

1An Error For De Bure No. 1288, Which Describes The Edition Of Seneca Listed Here.

2Written below this number, in another hand, is the number “1743”, and following the description, in the same hand, “Nm: 263” (the latter possibly referring to the number of the same item in a Van Damme catalogue); neither No. 3362 nor No. 1743 in De Bure refers to Van Dale, but De Bure No. 5743 is a description of Van Dale, Dissertationes de origine ac progressu Idololatrie & Superstitionum, Amsterdam, 1696, 4to., which may have been the volume intended. However, the preceding item, “No. 163,” is inserted in RC in TJ’s hand in another ink and does not appear in PrC; therefore, this may be TJ’s correction and clarification of the original listing, the entry for De Bure No. 163 being: “Antonii Van Dale Dissertatio super Aristea de LXX. Interpretibus…. Amst. Wolters, 1705. in 4°.” This volume was sent to TJ in June 1788 and is the only work by Van Dale listed in the Library Catalogue, 1815 description begins Catalogue of the Library of the United States, Washington, 1815 description ends .

3At foot of text TJ wrote: “Monsieur Jefferson, ministre plenipotentiaire des etats unis d’Amerique à Paris.”
