From Thomas Jefferson to Henry Knox, 6 February 1788

To Henry Knox

Paris Feb. 6. 1788.

Sir

The inclosed papers, stating the claims of John Jackson, an English pilot, on the justice and liberality of the United states, have been addressed to me. I can do nothing better than to forward them to you, as I suppose the claim to belong properly to your department. I formerly forwarded to the President of Congress an application from the same person, but never learnt whether any thing was done in it.

I have the honour to be with sentiments of the most perfect esteem and respect Sir your most obedient & most humble Servt.,

Th: Jefferson

PrC (DLC). Tr (DNA: PCC, No. 150, iii); endorsed and with a separate label which reads, in part: “to the Secretary at War (Copied for Congress).” Enclosures (same): (1) Tr of a letter from an unidentified source to R. & A. Garvey, dated Hull, 14 Jan. 1788, asking assistance for John Jackson, of Hull. (2) Tr of John Paul Jones’ certificate concerning Jackson, 15 Nov. 1779. (3) Affidavit of two justices of the peace and the mayor of the “Town and County of Kingston upon Hull” testifying that the said Jackson is now living in that place and is the same person to whom Jones’ certificate was issued. See TJ to Jay, 12 July 1785, and notes there; also Garvey to TJ, 1 Feb. 1788.
