I have inclosd a list of a Tool Chest which 2 ft. 5 Inches long Wide and deep in proportion—With two drawers besides the upper division. I can easily accomadate the Chest to the tools you will please approve of or enlarge the Size if more is wanted. I am Sr. Your obliged Humble servt.

Thomas Robinson was a wholesale ironmonger in London who subsequently moved to 11 Spring Gardens (Roger Wakefield, Wakefield’s Merchant and Tradesman’s General Directory for London … For the Year 1790 [London, 1790], 283). TJ had the purchase of a tool chest “containing small tools for wooden and iron work” in mind before leaving Paris for London (TJ to Rayneval, 3 Mch. 1786). In April 1786 he paid Robinson a total of £12.1 for the chest and its contents (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, forthcoming in The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 4, 11 Apr. 1786).
