From John Jay to James Duane, 30 September 1785

To James Duane

NYork 30 Septr 1785

Dr Sir

Permit me to request the Favor of you to obtain a Decision this Evening respecting the proposed Regulations of New Street and the Broad Way—The Season will now admit of digging Cellars & preparing Foundations for Houses; and nothing prevents my beginning with mine, but the want of Information respecting the Intention of the Corporation to make or not to make the proposed Amendments to those Streets—I join on them both, & want to build on them both—vizt. a Dwelling House on the Broadway & a Stable on new Street—1 I wish to conform to the Designs of the Corporation, and not to hazard future Difficulties, by exposing myself to Alteration in the Streets, which would effectually Spoil both House & Stable if built on the Idea of those Streets continuing as they are—I have already given you much Trouble on this Subject; but I flatter myself the Circumstances which press me to it, will afford an appology—I am Dr Sir with great Esteem & Regard Your most obt. Servt.

John Jay

The Honb. Jams. Duane Esqr.

ALS, NHi: Duane (EJ: 660).
