4. This is probably John Mills who had a store in Alexandria during the Revolution. He may have settled there by this time. See Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg), 22 July 1773, and Virginia Gazette (Dixon and Nicolson; Williamsburg), 14 Aug. 1779.

5. A granny was a nurse or midwife.

6. Burk’s Bridge was about eleven miles south of Bowling Green where the main road to Richmond crossed the Mattaponi River. Hanover Court House, now Hanover, is fifteen miles north of Richmond.

7. Gabriel Galt (1748–1788) had a tavern in Richmond on the northwest corner of Nineteenth and Main streets below Church Hill.

8. Abraham Cowley’s tavern was near the intersection of what became Main and Twenty-second streets in Richmond. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends “at the Mouth of Coal River by Colo. Christy.” This is William Christian of Fincastle County rather than William Christy of Pittsburgh. Christian (c.1743–1786) was a burgess and a member of the Virginia Convention meeting in March in Richmond. He had commanded a regiment of Fincastle men in Dunmore’s War and would become a noted Indian fighter during the Revolution. For the land on Coal River, see William Preston to GW, 15 Aug. 1774, and note 2 of that document. An entry in an account book of surveyors’ fees for Fincastle County in DLC: Campbell-Preston Papers, f. 50, has a charge of £3.6.8 for “surveying 2000 Acres of Land” for GW, and the amount is posted as paid in March 1775 “By Cash by Col.
