D, Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , 190, 191.

See Cash Accounts, February 1775, n.11. John Hoskins Stone was from Charles County, Maryland. He was at Mount Vernon on 12 Mar. (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:313). See also entry under Contra.

See entry in Cash above.

This is probably John Mills who had a store in Alexandria during the Revolution. He may have settled there by this time. See Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg), 22 July 1773, and Virginia Gazette (Dixon and Nicolson; Williamsburg), 14 Aug. 1779.

A granny was a nurse or midwife.

Burk’s Bridge was about eleven miles south of Bowling Green where the main road to Richmond crossed the Mattaponi River. Hanover Court House, now Hanover, is fifteen miles north of Richmond.

Gabriel Galt (1748–1788) had a tavern in Richmond on the northwest corner of Nineteenth and Main streets below Church Hill.

Abraham Cowley’s tavern was near the intersection of what became Main and Twenty-second streets in Richmond. GW was there in the evening (Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends ).

In his Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends GW has added “for the Delega[t]es.” See citation in note 2 above.

This amount, illegible in the cash accounts, has been taken from the Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends .

GW added in his Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends “at the Mouth of Coal River by Colo. Christy.” This is William Christian of Fincastle County rather than William Christy of Pittsburgh. Christian (c.1743–1786) was a burgess and a member of the Virginia Convention meeting in March in Richmond. He had commanded a regiment of Fincastle men in Dunmore’s War and would become a noted Indian fighter during the Revolution. For the land on Coal River, see William Preston to GW, 15 Aug. 1774, and note 2 of that document. An entry in an account book of surveyors’ fees for Fincastle County in DLC: Campbell-Preston Papers, f. 50, has a charge of £3.6.8 for “surveying 2000 Acres of Land” for GW, and the amount is posted as paid in March 1775 “By Cash by Col. Christian.” See also GW to Preston, 27 March.

The Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends reads: “By Do sent Captn Floyd for said Land—by Do [William Christian].”

See GW to Andrew Lewis, 27 Mar. and notes to that document.
