From John Ridout

Annapolis [Md.] October 14. 1754.

Sir

The Receipt of Yours by the Express Yesterday His Excellency desires me to acknowledge;1 which that I do so briefly You will be kind enough to excuse & attribute to my being in some hast to make preparations for accompanying the Governor to Williamsburgh, for which place He is just about to embark, & from the Contents of Your Letter expects to have the pleasure of seeing You there also.2 in the mean time beleive me with great Regard Your most obedt & most humb. Servant

J. Ridout

ALS, DLC:GW. Besides the address “to Colo. Washington at Belhaven,” the cover reads “J. Ross Cl. Conc.” John Ross, who was appointed clerk of the council of Maryland in 1732, was also in charge of enlisting Maryland troops.

1GW’s letter to Gov. Horatio Sharpe has not been found.

2Sharpe was invited to Williamsburg to meet Dinwiddie and Arthur Dobbs, the latter being the newly appointed governor of North Carolina who had just arrived in Williamsburg from England with orders, letters, and a commission for Sharpe to command all the colonial forces that would be raised to drive the French from Fort Duquesne. Sharpe arrived in Williamsburg on 19 Oct., and GW arrived 2 days later.
