From George Washington to Robert Cary & Company, 11 September 1762

To Robert Cary & Company

Mount Vernon 11th Septr 1762.

Gentn

On board the Nautilus Captn Boyes I have consigned you Twenty two hhds of my Tobacco, and Thirty of Master Custis;1 and in the Brunswick Captn Hurling from James River there are Ten more of mine, and Twenty nine of Master Custis’s to your address likewise on which please to make proper Insurance.2

I have just received advice, that Captn Cuzzens in the Unity after having been at Sea sometime sprung a Leak and put back. I imagine therefore that She will now Sail with the Convoy appointed for the 20th of this Month and that it will be necessary to make fresh Insurance on my Twenty hogsheads Tobacco on board for your House.3 I shall write fully in my next, at present I have only to add that I am Gentn Yr Mo. hble Servt

ALS, CSmH; ALB, DLC:GW. The cover of the ALS is docketed “Recd the 25 Oct. ⅌ N.Y. Packet.” The ALB has the notation, “Sent to New York—to go in the Packet.” There are only minor differences in the two copies.

1In his account with Cary, GW made this entry: “To 22 Hhds of Tobo Shipd you in the Nautilus [John] Boyes in the year 1762 whereof 5 JC sold for £34.1.8 & the rest for £75.3.2 in all 109.4.10” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 198).

2GW received £65.13.9 sterling for his ten hogsheads. In his ledger GW identifies the captain of the Brunswick as Hurling (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 154). The ship Brunswick, Captain Corrie, cleared the upper naval district of the James River carrying tobacco in October 1762.

3GW reported in his letter of 15 Nov. 1762 that he had been misinformed about the Unity having to turn back.
