To Benjamin Franklin from John Foxcroft, 2 November 1774

From John Foxcroft

Extract in Franklin’s hand:2 American Philosophical Society

Nov. 2. 1774

Mr. Colden3 is now busy in making out a fair and clear State of the Office Accounts, which will assuredly be transmitted together with proper Vouchers by the next Packet.

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

2The first in a series, headed “Extracts of Letters from Mr. Foxcroft to B Franklin,” that BF enclosed in his note to Anthony Todd below, March 18. We have deleted his quotation marks around each extract, to accord with our usual form, and have converted such marks within the text into suspension points.

3Either the ailing Alexander Colden, comptroller of the American post office, or his son Richard Nicholls Colden, who had been assisting him and had had some correspondence with BF: above, Jan. 5, April 6. Foxcroft, in response to BF’s warning letter above, Sept. 7, must have urged the comptroller’s office to finish the accounts that had been due the previous April.
