New York, September 24, 1800. Requests Hamilton to act as counsel for his brother-in-law,2 who as the guarantor of a large debt may lose twenty thousand dollars.3

2Lewis Simond, Wilkes’s brother-in-law, was a New York City merchant.

3This is a reference to the case of Daniel Ludlow and Gulian Ludlow v Augier Marie Leremboure and Lewis Simond. See MS Minutes, New York Court of Chancery, 1801–1804, 1804–1807, under the dates of May 29, October 25, 1802, January 18, May 27, 1803, June 13, 1805 (Hall of Records, New York City). The Ludlows and Leremboure were New York City merchants. An entry in H’s Law Register, 1795–1804, reads:
