United States, In Senate, December the 1st. 1800.

Sir,

The Senate of the United States, have requested me to notify your Excellency, that the honorable James Lloyd hath resigned his seat in the Senate, as appears by the Journals of the Senate, an authenticated copy whereof I have directed to be made out and herewith transmit for your information and that of the Legislature of the State of Maryland.

I have the honor to be, Sir, Your Excellency’s most obedt. and hble. servt. Vice President of the United States and President of the Senate.

RC (MHi); signature only in TJ’s hand; at foot of text: “His Excellency The Governor of the State of Maryland.” Not recorded in SJL. Enclosure: Resolution of U.S. Senate, 1 Dec. 1800 (MS in same; attested by Samuel A. Otis).

James Lloyd, Federalist senator from Maryland, was elected to fill the vacancy created when John Henry resigned to become governor of Maryland. Lloyd served from December 1797 until 1 Dec. 1800 when he also resigned (DAB description begins Allen Johnson and Dumas Malone, eds., Dictionary of American Biography, New York, 1928–36, 20 vols. description ends ; Biog. Dir. Cong.). Lloyd’s letter to TJ of 12 Nov. 1800 written from “Kent county. Maryld.” was recorded in SJL as received 1 Dec. but has not been found.
