kemps tavern: Peter Kemp ran the Globe Tavern at the northeast corner of Cameron and Fairfax streets. The tavern had had several earlier proprietors, including George H. Leigh, John Abert, and Henry Lyles. John Wise, who built the newer of the two buildings now comprising Gadsby’s tavern had also been the proprietor at one time ( , 129, 133; Alexandria Journal, 19 April 1787; Columbian Mirror [Alexandria], 15 Oct. 1799; , 54, 76).
