From George Washington to Samuel Hanson, 23 July 1797

To Samuel Hanson

Mount Vernon 23d July 97

Dr Sir,

Enclosed is the certificate of the hundred shares of Stock in the Bank of Columbia, given to Mr Tobias Lear the 6th of April 1796 and transferred by him to me the 18th instant.1 A certificate thereof I pray you to transmit me by the Post—or other safe conveyance—With esteem & regard I am—Dear Sir Your Obedient Hble Servt

Samuel Hanson of Samuel (c.1752–1830) was cashier of the Bank of Columbia. In the 1780s GW’s nephews Lawrence Augustine Washington and George Steptoe Washington boarded with Hanson in Alexandria.

1On 2 June 1795 Tobias Lear bought for GW 100 shares in the Bank of Columbia at $40 a share. Lear had them registered in his own name but gave GW a certificate that showed they belonged to GW.
