Clement Biddle to Tobias Lear

Walnut Street [Philadelphia] Decr 8 [17]98

Dr sir

I have sent a bale wth 5 pieces of Blankets on board the Brig for Alexandria and will endeavor to get the bill of loading in time for this Evening—I am waiting for the picture frame from McEllwee which he has repeatedly promised & dissappointed me.1 Yr very Ob. st

1Biddle wrote Lear again the next morning: “I have delayd sending the bill of loading until this morning in hopes of geting the picture frame from McEllwee the maker, but he put me Off with promises til Evening & did not get it on board but assures me he will before the vessel Sails tomorrow at Ten OClock—the bill of loading for the other Articles is enclosed also the bill for the Blankets which I purchased by the bale at the lowest Cash price—they are more than you directed but could not get a bale to contain less—I am with great Esteem Dr sir Your mo. obed.St” (DLC:GW).

Biddle’s account with GW, dated 5 Feb. 1799 and enclosed in Biddle’s letter of that date, indicates that the charge for the blankets was $157.26 and for the picture frames, $16.33. Biddle’s receipts from Denman & Co., 13 Dec. 1798, for payment for the blankets, and from John McElwee, 19 Dec. 1798, are in ViMtvL.
