T Kosciuszko

RC (MHi); date assigned on the basis that this document appears to be an addendum to the preceding letter, TJ recorded the receipt of two letters from Kosciuszko under the same date in SJL, and by its contents this letter most likely precedes Kosciuszko to TJ, [24–29 Aug. 1798]; endorsed by TJ as received 25 Dec. 1798 and recorded in SJL as an undated letter from Kosciuszko received on that day.

Paid in Amsterdam by Mr Pickney: from London in 1793 Thomas Pinckney had arranged for a bill of exchange of more than 7,000 florins banco to be drawn on Grand & Cie. in Paris and deposited by the Willink, Van Staphorst & Hubbard firm in either Leipzig or Dresden as payment of interest due Kosciuszko from the United States through 1792. During Kosciuszko’s residence in America both Pinckney and Wolcott had written to the Dutch firm to request that the funds be returned to the U.S. for Kosciuszko (Pinckney to Willink, Van Staphorst, & Hubbard, 7 Dec.1797, Tr in MHi; Kosciuszko to TJ, [on or before 23 Mch. 1798]). Kosciuszko wrote the letter above before he learned that the bankers had returned the money long before; see his letter printed below under an inferred date of 24 Aug. 1798 or after.
