1. This probably was one of the three letters that Alexander Hamilton wrote McHenry on 19 October. In one of these Hamilton expresses his satisfaction at being ranked first among the three major generals and agrees to meet in Philadelphia in early November (Syrett, Hamilton Papers, description begins Harold C. Syrett et al., eds. The Papers of Alexander Hamilton. 27 vols. New York, 1961–87. description ends 22:202–3). In another, from which Timothy Pickering quotes in his letter to GW of this date, Hamilton reports that Charles Cotesworth Pinckney had accepted the ranking of the major generals (ibid., 201–2).

2. Horry was a brother of Nelly Custis’s friend Harriott Pinckney Horry Rutledge. The poetry has not been identified.
