MS (MHi); entirely in TJ’s hand; arranged by TJ with the debit column on the left and without aligning dates in the two columns; with last three lines in the debit column and final total in the credit column added by TJ in pencil; endorsed by TJ on verso “George Jefferson.”

TJ’s financial records indicate that he received a “post note” from John Barnes on Heth for $800 on 9 Jan. 1800 and enclosed it to George Jefferson three days later (see MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1013, and TJ to George Jefferson & Co., 13 Jan. 1800). Pick. Pol. & Johnson: Pickett, Pollard, & Johnston. On 20 May TJ recorded in his accounts that he gave Wilson Cary Nicholas’s draft for $450 on the Richmond firm to Gibson & Jefferson for collection (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1019). Letters from Pickett, Pollard, & Johnston to TJ of 10 Oct. and 1 Nov. 1797, recorded in SJL as received on 14 Oct. and 3 Nov., respectively, have not been found.

For the payment of the old debt TJ owed Ninian Minzies, see TJ to George Jefferson, 12 Jan. 1800. TJ discussed the February payments to John Watson and Richard Richardson in his letter to George Jefferson & Co. of 13 Jan. 1800. TJ referred to the 12 July payment to Watson in a letter to George Jefferson of 7 June. For the February payment to James Lyon for newspapers, see TJ to George Jefferson, 21 Feb. 1800.

Portage of nuts: this payment is probably for the pecans sent by Daniel Clark (TJ to Clark, 16 Jan. 1800; TJ to Richard Richardson, 10 Feb. 1800). George Jefferson purchased Edmund Randolph’s Abridgment of the Public Permanent Laws of Virginia for TJ (Vol. 31:406–7, 520). TJ recorded the settlement of his account with overseer William Page, who had leased land at Shadwell, at 20 Dec. 1799 (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1010–11, 1024). For the purchase and shipment of herring from Joseph Darmsdatt (Darmsdat), see Gibson & Jefferson to TJ, 27 May 1800. On 3 June TJ noted in his financial accounts that £4.4.7 of his payment to William J. Aldridge, recorded here on the 9th, was for groceries (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1021). For the payment to Aldridge in July, see TJ to George Jefferson, 9 July 1800. Gamble & Temple: TJ sold nails and purchased groceries and nailrod from this Richmond firm in 1795 and 1796 (Vol. 28:335–6, 431–2). For the old balance, see TJ to George Jefferson, 7 June 1800.
