From George Washington to Major General Stirling, 2 April 1779

To Major General Stirling

Head Quarters [Middlebrook] 2d April 1779

My Lord

As there are some other disputes of relative Rank subsisting among the Feild Officers of the Pennsylvania line, besides that between Majors Mentges, Murray and Nicol,1 I have desired Genl St Clair to direct such of them as are in Camp to attend your Board and lay before you their claims, upon which be pleased to make a report to me.2 I am my Lord Yr most obt Servt.

Df, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW.

1For the rank dispute involving majors Francis Mentges, John Murray, and Francis Nichols, see Peter Scull to GW, 22 Feb., n.1.

2Stirling’s board of general officers also included brigadier generals William Smallwood, Henry Knox, and Peter Muhlenberg. For this board’s settlement of the rank dispute between Col. Walter Stewart of the 2d Pennsylvania Regiment and Col. Thomas Craig of the 3d Pennsylvania Regiment, as well as the dispute involving the three Pennsylvania majors, see a Board of General Officers to GW, 23 April, DLC:GW.
