To George Washington from Brigadier General Nathanael Greene, 2 March 1776

From Brigadier General Nathanael Greene

2 March 1776. “I visited the . . . Guards in the left and Center Division1 and . . . found all the Guards in Good Order—Capt. Lewis reported Eight oClock this Morning Five sail of Ships were Coming into Boston.2 . . . N.B. Joel Hewit of Col. Sargeants Regiment & Francis Offy of Col. Greytons Regt3 confined in the Main Guard at Cambridge for Mutiny & Disobedience of Orders.”

ADS, DNA: RG 93, Revolutionary War Rolls. Greene included returns of the guards at each post and reported under “Occurrences of the Day” that “Nothing extraordinary happened,” but on Cobble Hill “the Guard House [was] much out of Repair.”

1Greene is referring to the division at Prospect and Winter hills formerly commanded by Gen. Charles Lee and to Gen. Israel Putnam’s division at Cambridge.

2The informant is probably Elijah Lewis (b. 1741) of Rhode Island who was a captain in Col. James Mitchell Varnum’s 9th Continental Regiment posted at Prospect Hill. Lewis, who had been a first lieutenant in Varnum’s Rhode Island regiment during 1775, remained a captain in the Continental army until he retired on 1 Jan. 1781.

3Col. John Greaton’s regiment.
