Mon Général
Permettez que j’aye l’honneur de remercier votre Excellence des marques de bonté que j’en ai reçû Pendant le Séjour que j’ai fait auprès d’elle en Son quartier Général. ce Sont des instants que je n’oublierai jamais par l’avantage Precieux qu’ils m’ont procuré de faire Connoissance avec le militaire fameux Sous les ordres du quel nous Sommes.
Le hazard m’ayant assès bien Servi pour rencontrer des troupes americaine qui marchent à l’ennemi; j’ose esperer que votre Excellence trouvera bon que je les accompagne et que je Sois avec elles le tems que je comptois passer à Philadelphie. M. de Saint-Victor Capitaine au Régiment de Soissonnois et mon Compagnon de voyage Prend la liberté de vous demander le même agrément.1 je me flatte que M. Le C[om]te de Rochambeau ne nous desaprouvera pas, en tant que je ne depasserai pas le tems qu’il m’a permis de voyager.
Ma Satisfaction est Grande de me trouver—Sous les ordres du Général La Fayette. La haute opinion que j’ai de Son zèle et de Son talent militaire, m’assure qu’il ne laissera pas échapper l’occasion de nous faire voir l’ennemi avec avantage, S’il y a Possibilité.2

Saint-Maisme requests GW’s permission to accompany the division of light infantry going to Virginia under the command of Major General Lafayette.
1. François d’Anselme de Saint-Victor (1745–1821) joined the French army as an ensign in the Soissonnais regiment in April 1761, was promoted to lieutenant the following November, and became a captain in April 1779. Named a chevalier of the royal and military order of Saint-Louis in 1782, he transferred to the Bourbonnais regiment in April 1784 with the duty of major. He rose to lieutenant colonel of the Bretagne regiment in 1789 and to colonel in 1791. He resigned in August 1792 and emigrated to Prussia but returned to France in 1801.
2. GW replied to Saint-Maisme from headquarters on 25 Feb.: “I beg you to be persuaded that I was happy in the opportunity which your short stay at Head-Quarters afforded me of giving you those marks of my attention and esteem to which you are so justly intitled.
“I cannot but see with pleasure the zeal which induces you to accompany the Marquis De la fayette in his present journey, assured that you would not take any step which you were not convinced would be perfectly agreeable to His Excellency the Count De Rochambeau—I beg the favour of you to impart from me the same sentiments to Capt. St Victor.
“I hope the occasion will afford you all the satisfaction you promise yourself—and that you will be persuaded of the interest I take in all that concerns you” (Df, in Alexander Hamilton’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC).
