General Orders

Head Quarters, at Col. Hill’s, Roxboro’ [Pa.] August 5th 1777.1

Parole: Alexandria.Countersigns: Virginia.

The General Court Martial ordered yesterday, is to sit to morrow morning, at nine o’clock, at Palmer’s tavern, at Schuylkill falls; and all members must attend without fail2—A Serjeant from brigade to attend the court.

1GW’s military family expense account contains entries for this date for £263.4 to “Daniel Smiths acct for the expences of His Excellencys family & Company as bill rendered” and for £5 for cash paid “for washing the Genls linnen” (DLC:GW, ser. 5, vol. 28).

2The orderly book kept by Capt. Jacob Turner of the 3d North Carolina Regiment concludes the general orders with the following text: “1 sergt. from each Brigade to attend the Court and 1 Capt for s’d Court martial; 1 Corprel & 6 men for guard” (“Turner’s Orderly Book,” 480).
