To James Madison from George Sullivan, 12 May 1825
From George Sullivan
May 12th. 1825
Mr Sullivan with best respects to President Madison regrets he had not opportunity to deliver the enclosed1 before. He & Mrs. S. unite in respectful salutations to Mr & Mrs Madison with sincere wishes for their health & long continued happiness.
RC (DLC). Docketed by JM.
1. The enclosure was probably John Quincy Adams’s letter introducing George Sullivan to JM, dated 18 Nov. 1824. The Sullivans left Washington on a visit to Monticello and Montpelier on 8 May 1825 and returned to the city on 15 May. Adams reported in his 18 May 1825 diary entry that Sullivan “spoke of his visits,” telling him that JM “appeared cordially disposed to this Administration. Mr Jefferson less so; and particularly with regard to Mr Clay” (MHi: Adams Papers [microfilm ed.], reel 7).
