2Dr. Charles Beale (1795–1853) was a veteran of the War of 1812 who served in the Virginia militia and founded the town of Gordonsville. He married Mary Harrison Gordon, daughter of Nathaniel Gordon, and purchased an estate he called Weston that fell on both sides of the Richmond–Swift Run Gap road. Beale encouraged railroad- and turnpike-building and divided his estate into town lots, which his wife sold after his death (William H. B. Thomas, Gordonsville, Virginia: Historic Crossroads Town [Verona, Va., 1971], 10–11, 16, 17, 21–23, 55; Virgil D. White, comp., Index to War of 1812 Pension Files [2 vols.; Waynesboro, Tenn., 1992], 1:127).

3John N. Gordon, a Richmond merchant, was the son of Nathaniel Gordon, the proprietor of Gordon’s Tavern; John sold the tavern in 1830 (Thomas, Gordonsville, Virginia, 10–11; Richmond Enquirer, 7 Mar. 1823; Richmond Daily Whig, 17 Dec. 1849).
