Dear Sir
The unfavorable state of the weather since my arrival here, has kept me so much confind, that I have been unable, to pay, that attention to my affairs, that I should otherwise have done. I shall however be with you in the course of the insuing week. I send you a letter from Judge Nelson,1 & two from Mr. Appleton,2 which give the latest accounts, from them, of affairs in Spain. I send you also, one, from Mr. Calhoun,3 which contains the information desird, of the vote in the Senate, on the nomination of Genl. Armstrong. Very sincerely dear Sir yours

2. These were probably the letters from John J. Appleton to Secretary of State John Quincy Adams of 20 June and 9 July 1823 (DNA: RG 59, DD, Spain, Register). John James Appleton (1792–1864), a graduate of Harvard, was born in Calais, France, and served as secretary of legation at Rio de Janeiro, 1819–22, Madrid, 1822–25, London, 1825–26, and chargé d’affaires in Sweden from 1826 until he was recalled in 1830. He died in Rennes, France (“Some Notes on the Commencements at Harvard University, 1803–1848,” Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society, 2nd ser., 5 [1890]: 177; , 3:180, 306, 308, 413, 415, 528, 534; Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics, 3 Apr. 1830).
3. The enclosure was John C. Calhoun to Monroe, 29 Aug. 1823 (2 pp.; DLC: Rives Collection, Madison Papers), informing the president that “the vote on Genl Armstrong’s nomination, as Secty at War, was yeas 18 and noes 15. The clerk, under the rules of the Senate, declind furnishg the names.”
