Henry R. Schoolcraft1 has the honor of presenting to James Madison Esqr., the inclosed geological memoir,2 which he begs will be accepted with the respectful compliments of the author.

1. Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793–1864) was a geologist and later an ethnologist who wrote voluminously about his travels in Missouri, Arkansas, and the Great Lakes region and the Indians he met there. In 1822 he was appointed agent for the Indian tribes around Lake Superior; he was superintendent of Indian affairs for Michigan, 1836–41.
