George Divers to Thomas Jefferson, [3 May 1820?]

From George Divers

[3 May 1820?]

G. Divers to Mr Jefferson

my sea Kale plants are quite too small to transplant, they are however out of the way of the fly and if the worms dont destroy them I can Supply you with as many plants as will make a pretty good bed in the course of ten or twelve days; be pleas’d to offer Mrs Ds and my respects to Mrs Randolph Mrs Trist and the Young Ladies and accept assurances of my respect and esteem

RC (MHi); undated, with “May 3.” at foot of text in TJ’s hand; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson esqr Monticello”; with Dft of TJ to Benjamin Morgan and Thomas B. Robertson, 26 May 1820, on verso, and list by TJ in pencil on address leaf: “rain snaps peas 2.D,” with “.24” and “1.38” added in ink by TJ adjacent to “rain” and beneath list, respectively. TJ also reused the recto and verso of this text for an early, undated version of his specifications for Pavilion X of the University of Virginia.

On 18 Apr. 1820 Elizabeth trist wrote to Nicholas P. Trist from Divers’s Farmington estate that TJ had “sent Mr Divers a phamplet [i.e., pamphlet] in vindication of General Jackson.” It was likely the publication for which TJ thanked Andrew Jackson in his letter of 22 Nov. [1819]. She also reported that TJ “came and took a family Dinner with us last week”; that bad weather had probably prevented TJ from setting out on 16 Apr. for Poplar Forest with his grandsons Benjamin F. Randolph and Meriwether Lewis Randolph as intended; and that TJ “wishes all the family to spend 2 months at poplar Forest this summer” (DLC: NPT).
