RC (ViU: TJP); endorsed by TJ as received 29 Apr. 1817 and so recorded in SJL; with additional notation by TJ on verso: “Capt Robert Simington. Norfolk.” RC (CSmH: JF-BA); address cover only; with PoC of TJ to Daniel Lescallier, 14 June 1817, on verso; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Monticello”; stamped; postmarked Petersburg, 22 Apr.

On 29 Apr. 1817 Dinsmore informed John H. Cocke from Petersburg that either himself or John neilson would “do your work, as I have promised mr Jefferson to execute a Job in the Neighbou[r]hood of Charlottesville this fall—of which he mentions you as one of the visitors & in Consequence have made arrangements to quit here So Soon as we finish our present Engagements which will be in about two months” (RC in ViU: JHC; one word editorially corrected). That work was at Cocke’s Bremo estate, while the proposed building in loudon County was subsequently constructed as James Monroe’s Oak Hill plantation.

The two books were Sir Richard Baker, A Chronicle of the Kings of England (London, 1684; Poor, Jefferson’s Library description begins Nathaniel P. Poor, Catalogue. President Jefferson’s Library, 1829 description ends , 4 [no. 100]; for an earlier ed. see Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends no. 357), and an unidentified edition of Louis Maimbourg, The History of the Crusade; or, the Expeditions of the Christian Princes for the Conquest of the Holy Land, trans. John Nalson (London, 1685; Poor, Jefferson’s Library description begins Nathaniel P. Poor, Catalogue. President Jefferson’s Library, 1829 description ends , 5 [no. 161]). TJ had previously owned the latter work in the original French (Histoire des Croisades pour la delivrance de la Terre Sainte, 4 vols. [2d ed., Paris, 1682; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends no. 619]).
