MS (MHi); written on a small scrap in an unidentified hand; undated; endorsed by TJ at foot of text: “Lynchbg. Hoyle. Sep. 13. 15.”; with TJ’s subjoined calculation that the amount owed was $2.58, the sum of $2.33 and an apparent $0.25 tip.

Charles Hoyle (1753–1825), innkeeper, was a native of Ireland. By 1802 he leased and operated the Indian Queen tavern in Lynchburg. After the Franklin Hotel opened in that city in 1817, Hoyle acted as its manager (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C.
