Dear Sir
One of those cases now occurs which oblige me to relax from my general wish not to add to your troubles in the disposel of offices. I inclose you the papers which produce the occasion, and they will present to you all the grounds of interest which I can possibly feel in the success of the application.1 They will have with you exactly the weight they intrinsically merit & no m⟨o⟩re. 1. Jefferson enclosed a 15 July 1815 letter to him from Georgetown merchant, banker, and botanist Obadiah Rich (2 pp.), requesting Jefferson’s support in his application for the consulship at Málaga. Rich enclosed a copy of a September 1809 letter to JM from Crowell Hatch and eleven other residents of Boston (2 pp.), recommending Rich to be consul at Valencia, which Jefferson also forwarded. Rich was appointed to the latter position and held it until replaced shortly after Andrew Jackson became president (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1809–17, filed under “Rich”; Looney et al., Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series, 8:602).
