To James Madison from John Armstrong, 19 November 1813

From John Armstrong

Albany 19th. Nov. 1813.

Dear Sir,

You will find in the enclosed letters (1 & 2) the probable termination of the campaign on the St. Laurence.1

What I may have to say in regard to this, I shall reserve untill I have the pleasure of seeing you.

I shall remain here a day or two longer, in the hope of hearing something directly from Genl W. and of thus being enabled to give some directions adapted to the new circumstances in which he has placed himself. I am Sir, with the highest respect Your faithful & Obed. servant

John Armstrong

RC (DLC). Docketed by JM. For enclosures, see n. 1.

1Armstrong probably enclosed Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton’s letter to him of 15 Nov. 1813 (2 pp.; DNA: RG 107, LRUS, H-1813), covering a copy of Maj. Gen. James Wilkinson to Hampton, 12 Nov. 1813 (1 p.; DNA: RG 107, LRUS, W-1813), in which Wilkinson wrote that he had received Hampton’s letter of 8 Nov. (for the letter, see Armstrong to JM, 14 Nov. 1813, n. 2), was deeply disappointed that Hampton had declined to join him, and would encamp his army near French Mills for the winter since Hampton’s decision had “defeat[ed] the grand objects of the campaign in this quarter.” In his letter to Armstrong, Hampton dismissed Wilkinson’s attempt to blame him for the failure of the campaign and informed Armstrong that he would travel south after providing for winter accommodations for his troops. Wilkinson’s letter and an extract of Hampton’s are printed in ASP, Military Affairs, description begins American State Papers: Documents, Legislative and Executive, of the Congress of the United States … (38 vols.; Washington, 1832–61). description ends 1:463.
