To James Madison from Francis Thornton, 6 July 1812 (Abstract)

§ From Francis Thornton1

6 July 1812, “Fall Hill near Fredericksburg.” “I have come to the determination most cordially to surrender the endearments of domestic tranquillity for the Tented field—and do hereby make a tender of service to you, and my Country. I should prefer the Volunteer Army which appears to be the favorite military force with the substantial Yeomanry of our Country.”

RC (DLC). 1 p. Docketed by JM.

1This letter was probably tendered by the Francis Thornton (b. 1760) who had served in the Revolutionary War as a colonel. It is less likely that the letter came from his son of the same name (1796–1881), who became a minister in Kentucky after the War of 1812 (WMQ description begins William and Mary Quarterly. description ends , 1st ser., 6 [1897–98]: 112–13, 243).
