6 July 1812, “Fall Hill near Fredericksburg.” “I have come to the determination most cordially to surrender the endearments of domestic tranquillity for the Tented field—and do hereby make a tender of service to you, and my Country. I should prefer the Volunteer Army which appears to be the favorite military force with the substantial Yeomanry of our Country.”

1. This letter was probably tendered by the Francis Thornton (b. 1760) who had served in the Revolutionary War as a colonel. It is less likely that the letter came from his son of the same name (1796–1881), who became a minister in Kentucky after the War of 1812 (WMQ description begins William and Mary Quarterly. description ends , 1st ser., 6 [1897–98]: 112–13, 243).
