James Madison Papers

To James Madison from Peterson Goodwyn and Others, 26 June 1812 (Abstract)

§ From Peterson Goodwyn and Others

26 June 1812, House of Representatives. “We beg leave to recommend … for a field appointment in the new army Capt. Winfield Scott,1 whose military pretensions are highly spoken of by men well qualified to Judge. Independently of Capt. Scott’s acquirements in tactics he is a gentleman of character talents and activity. His appointment would therefore be extremely gratifying to his friends.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1809–17, filed under “Scott”). 1 p. Signed by Peterson Goodwyn and eight other members of the Virginia congressional delegation.

1Scott had returned to service in the fall of 1811 after his court-martial the previous year (see PJM-PS description begins Robert A. Rutland et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Presidential Series (4 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 1984–). description ends , 2:255–56 and n. 1). He was appointed lieutenant colonel of artillery on 5 July 1812 on the recommendation of William Eustis, which had been forwarded to Congress by JM on 2 July (Senate Exec. Proceedings description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends , 2:283, 284, 287).
