MS (ViU: TJP, TB [Thurlow-Berkeley no.] 1136 [546-e]); written entirely in TJ’s hand on the front of part of a reused address cover to TJ; folded into quarters, as noted below; undated, with conjectural date based on assumption that these notes preceded TJ’s 12 May 1812 letters to Samuel J. Harrison and William Mitchell.
On 19 May 1812 TJ gave Jeremiah A. Goodman $6 to pay for an additional one hundred pounds of hemp and $8.33 for fifty pounds of cotton. A day earlier he settled his account with Samuel J. harrison, who purchased twenty-three hogsheads of tobo for nearly $2,000. On 19 May TJ also settled his wheat account with mitchell’s partnership (William & Reuben Mitchell) ( , 2:1277).
Richard stith’s deed conveying property to John wayles has not been found. For scott’s entry of apr. 15. 89 and his or tate’s land apr. 26. 03, see Samuel Scott’s Bill of Complaint in Scott v. Jefferson and Harrison, [before 27 Apr. 1812], and note. Stith’s name had been incorrectly copied as smith. Bedford County was divided in 1782, when Campbell County was created ( [1781–82 sess.], 6). For the 1809 resurvey run by Campbell County surveyor William P. martin, see note to TJ to Christopher Clark, 1 Apr. 1810, and Martin to TJ, [received 16 May 1812]. bedford County was established in 1753, not 1752 ( [1752–53 sess.], 33). For Samuel Scott’s offer to buy the Ivy Creek tract in November 1796, see note to TJ to James Martin, 18 Feb. 1810.
1. First quarter ends here.
2. Immediately above this line and at the top of this quarter are two sets of vertical hatch marks and TJ’s calculation that their totals of 18 and 26 add up to 44.
3. This line repeats a calculation that TJ made in the upper right-hand corner of this quarter.
4. Word probably written before the preceding line, which is squeezed in immediately above it. Second quarter ends here. Remaining two quarters oriented upside down with relation to first two.
5. Preceding four words interlined.
6. Third quarter ends here.
7. TJ here canceled “qu of Bedfd.”
