To John Jay from Timothy Pickering, 5 February 1811

From Timothy Pickering

City of Washington Feby. 5. 1811.

Dear Sir,

The conduct of the Government towards Spain and her territories has produced animadversions from various quarters; and in divers instances it has been asserted, that of all the European powers, Spain was the first to give us aid in our revolutionary war. I do not know on what authority this assertion inst is made. You, if any one, must know the facts in the case; with which, [if your health will permit the communication, I wish to be made acquainted.]

I excuse myself for troubling you with this inquiry, as it gives me occasion to ask, with the solicitude I always feel, what is the state of your health, and to express my hope that it is better than when I last had the honour to address you. With great & sincere respect & esteem I am, dear sir, yr. obedt. servt.
