§ Account with St. Mary’s College. 30 June 1806. Records payment by JM of $222.53 ½ on John Payne Todd’s account as detailed in an 8 Jan.–7 June 1806 statement (PJM-SS description begins Robert J. Brugger et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Secretary of State Series (12 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 1986–). description ends 11:164–65). Allocates the funds received to various St. Mary’s accounts as follows: linens, including mending and washing ($75.80 ½); bookstore, for classic books, items furnished, and washing ($17.20½); infirmary, for doctor’s fees and remedies ($4); postage ($.92 ½); advances to pupils, for six months of French lessons paid to Mr. Bergerac ($24.60); advance payment for six months’ tuition ($25); and advance payment for six months’ board ($75).
