To James Madison from William C. C. Claiborne, 18 March 1806 (Abstract)

From William C. C. Claiborne, 18 March 1806 (Abstract)

§ From William C. C. Claiborne. 18 March 1806, New Orleans. “I enclose you a copy of a letter which I yesterday received from the Governor General of Cuba,1 from which it would seem that the Spanish Government did not expect, speedily, to adjust, with the United States, the Limits of Louisiana.”

RC and enclosure (DNA: RG 59, TP, Orleans, vol. 8). RC 1 p.; in a clerk’s hand, signed by Claiborne; docketed by Wagner: “28 March 1806.”

1The enclosure (1 p.; in Spanish; docketed by Wagner) is a copy of a 22 Feb. 1806 letter from the marqués de Someruelos to Claiborne stating that he had been warned by his government that it was not in accord with that of the United States about the limits of Louisiana; that to save expenses everyone occupied with the commission would be recalled to their previous locations; that this would also apply to the marqués de Casa Calvo when he had concluded matters concerning the transfer of Louisiana; that Casa Calvo was so charged in the enclosed statement (not found); and asking that Claiborne give the statement to Casa Calvo, should he be in New Orleans, rather than forward it to him, adding that he, Someruelos, was taking advantage of the American ship Franklin’s having arrival at Havana to send this to Claiborne.
