§ From Henry Sergeant1

3 December 1804, Philadelphia. “Being about to embark for the Port of Antwerp in Europe & thence to sail to Calcutta in the East Indies, I take the liberty. of requesting that you will have forwarded to me the necessary passport. As I expect to sail about the 7th. or 8th. Inst. it will be necessary that no Time be lost.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, Letters Requesting Passports). 1 p.; docketed by Wagner as received 6 Dec. Written at the foot of the RC is an undated note from Clement Biddle: “Mr Henry Sergeant is the son of our late worthy Citizen Jonathan D Sergeant Esquire & a native of this City & as such I beg leave to recommend him for a passport.”

1Henry Sergeant and his twin brother, Thomas, both of whom graduated from Princeton in 1798, were among the eight children of attorney and Continental Congress member Jonathan Dickinson Sergeant and his wife, Margaret Spencer Sergeant (McLachlan, Princetonians, 1748–1768, 408–9).
