I inclose you a postnote on the bank of the US. at Philadelphia drawn by the branch bank here, in discharge of a bill for instruments to that amount furnished to Isaac Briggs partly for him & partly for myself. Accept my salutations.

The $50 that TJ sent to Whitney included a remittance of $27 for Isaac Briggs and $23 for “mathematical instruments” for TJ, probably the brass rule and scale that he asked Briggs to obtain for him in June (MB description begins James A. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767-1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1130, 1131; Vol. 43:568).
