Enclosure: James Elliot to Granger, Brattleboro, 24 May 1803, noting two vacancies for bankruptcy commissioner in his district of Vermont, one due to his resignation, the other to Oliver Gallup’s declining to serve; Elliot recommends Samuel Knight, former chief justice of the state, who has indicated he will serve; Knight is “old, but still capable of business, and venerable in the decline of life; and is a very ardent republican” who has suffered under “federal persecution” (RC in DNA: RG 59, LAR; with note in TJ’s hand in margin: “Oliver Gallup was appd v. Elliott his nonacceptance then only leaves the same single vacancy”; endorsed by TJ: “Elliott James. to mr Granger. Knight Saml. to be commr. bkrptcy v. Elliott resd.”).

James Elliot (eliot) succeeded Federalist congressman Lewis R. morris (Biog. Dir. Cong. description begins Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774–1989, Washington, D.C., 1989 description ends ; Vol. 33:16, 17n).
