To Gibson & Jefferson
Washington Nov. 9. 1802.
Dear Sir
To keep you in bank I inclose you one hundred and fifty dollars to be entered to my credit.
I have this day drawn on you in favor of John Rogers of Albemarle for 43. D 91 c and in favor of Joseph Morin of Columbia for two hundred dollars, which please to honor when presented. Accept assurances of my friendly attachment & best wishes.
Th: Jefferson
PrC (MHi); at foot of text: “Messrs. Gibson & Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ in ink on verso. Recorded in SJL with notation “150. D.”
The draft on behalf of JOSEPH MORIN (Moran) was a portion of the $848 TJ owed for stone work done on the nailery and offices at Monticello. Starting with an initial payment of $100 in October, the president was to pay Moran in monthly installments of $200. A letter of this day from TJ to Moran has not been found but was recorded in SJL with the notation “200. D.” (, 2:1080, 1086).
