ELECTION OF YESTERDAY: under the 3 May 1802 act of Congress incorporating the city of Washington, the city council was to consist of 12 members elected annually on the first Monday of June. The votes were to be counted the following day in the presence of the district marshal (U.S. Statutes at Large description begins Richard Peters, ed., The Public Statutes at Large of the United States … 1789 to March 3, 1845, Boston, 1855–56, 8 vols. description ends , 2:195–7; Vol. 36:33). Results of the election were announced in the 9 June edition of the National Intelligencer, which identified Carroll, Blagden, More, King, Smith, and Hewitt as Republicans and added that “at least one, perhaps more of those which succeeded on the Federal ticket, are also Republican.”
