MS (DLC: TJ Papers, 119:20524); undated, but on or before 26 Dec. 1801 (see TJ’s memorandum to Gallatin, and Gallatin’s reply at 26 Dec. 1801); in a clerk’s hand, with emendations by Jacob Wagner rendered in italics; with one interlineation by TJ (see note 1, below); abbreviations or words in TJ’s hand, in ink, in left margin, usually designating the state where the office was held, except for the designations of the consuls and commercial agents, which he wrote in pencil; as TJ made a new list (see Document IV), he drew a vertical line, in ink, through the designations in the left margin and added a check mark, in pencil, beside each entry; torn; endorsed by TJ as received from the State Department in December 1801 and “Appointments.”

A. Marsh: that is, Charles Marsh (JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States … to the Termination of the Nineteenth Congress, Washington, D.C., 1828, 3 vols. description ends , 1:219).

Justices … for the County of Washington: Thomas Sim Lee is missing from the list (see Document II).

1. TJ wrote “John Laird,” in pencil, above this name and in subsequent lists Laird’s name appears instead of Benjamin More’s.

2. Remainder of entry interlined by Wagner in place of “vice Winthrop Sargeant” in a clerk’s hand.

3. Remainder of entry interlined by Wagner in place of “Edward St. Loe Livermore.” In Document IV, TJ restored Livermore.

4. TJ first wrote and then canceled “Western.”

5. Entry interlined.

6. Interlined in place of “Benjamin Jarvis.”

7. Remainder of entry interlined in place of “vice John Lee.”

8. TJ drew a diagonal line through this entry after receiving Gallatin’s reply to the memorandum printed at 26 Dec. 1801.
