RC (DLC); at foot of text: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr.”

In his financial memoranda on this day, TJ recorded the receipt of $20 from Barnes (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1057). He had apparently requested $20.75 to reimburse Thomas Newton for freight charges on the trees and Indian statues recently received from New Orleans (see Newton to TJ, 16 Oct. and TJ to Newton, 9 Nov.). For the power of attorney granted by TJ on 1 Nov. to Jonathan Smith to receive Tadeusz Kosciuszko’s stock dividends, see Vol. 36:126n.
