1This letter was apparently addressed to John V. Henry, comptroller of the state of New York from March, 1800, to August, 1801.

The letter concerns the payment to H for his services for New York State as an attorney in the controversy over the Connecticut Gore. H had represented New York before the United States Circuit Court, District of Connecticut, at Hartford in September, 1800, when the Court dismissed the cases. See Robert Troup to Rufus King, October 1, 1800 (King, The Life and Correspondence of Rufus King description begins Charles R. King, ed., The Life and Correspondence of Rufus King (New York, 1894–1900). description ends , III, 315). For a discussion of the Connecticut Gore controversy, see Goebel, Law Practice description begins Julius Goebel, Jr., ed., The Law Practice of Alexander Hamilton: Documents and Commentary (New York and London, 1964–). description ends , I, 657–84.

2ADS, sold by Merwin Sales Company, May 13, 1912, Lot No. 367. The description in the dealer’s catalogue reads: “Bill for services in NY and Conn Boundary Cases.”

3This is a reference to H’s country house, the Grange. See the introductory note to Philip Schuyler to H, July 17, 1800.
