Iron Company1

[New York, May 30, 1799. “I have receiv’d a deed from Peter Goelet & other Trustees of the American Iron Company. I certify that the fourth or last installment of the Purchase money with Interest remains to be paid, which will pay on demand. New York, May 30, 1799. Alexr Hambleton.” Receipt not found.]

1This receipt is quoted in, and has been taken from, Goelet to Robert Troup, August 19, 1799 (ALS, Miscellaneous Chancery Papers, American Iron Company, Clerk of the Court of Appeals, Albany, on deposit at Queens College, New York City).

Troup, a close friend of H since the time when they had been students at King’s College, was a New York City and Albany lawyer. A veteran of the American Revolution, he served as secretary of the Board of War from 1778 to 1779 and secretary of the Board of Treasury from 1779 to 1780. He was a member of the New York Assembly in 1786. In 1796 he was appointed judge of the United States District Court for New York, and he served in that capacity for two years. When this letter was written, he was involved in land speculation in western New York and was associated with Charles Williamson in the development of the Pulteney Purchase in the Genesee country.

In describing this receipt in his letter to Troup, Goelet wrote: “on the 30. Inst May last Genl Hambleton called on me & requested I would give him Genl Schuylers deeds, the Genl. wanted to see them. When I delivered him the Deeds he gave me the following recpt.”
